Brainstorming/Strategy Meeting on Water Crisis in Selangor

Few weeks ago, I attended a Brainstorming/Strategy Meeting on Water Crisis in Selangor.

Here's a sharing input from the meeting.

I am sure you guys are aware about the low water level and Selangor dam. For your information, Sungai Selangor is the main channel to the dam. As a consequences of dry spell, the river water is depleting. So what happen was Sgor gov (via Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS), Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran (JPS) Negeri Selangor serta Kumpulan Semesta Sdn. Bhd (KSSB) ) was pumping water collected from an ex-mining site (owned by Bestari Jaya) to refill the depleting water at Sg Sgor.

The concern raised in this meeting the water safety issue. As understood, ex-mining site contains heavy metals and the result of the water quality test on the level of contamination has been skewed.

*Why?

According to a research done by UM postgraduate student, there is a risk of heavy metal contamination. But unscrupulous act of certain party had conducted water quality test during rainy season and high water time. This should not be the way as contaminant is in diluted state. Therefore, the bias data.

*What are the outcome of this meeting and the actions going to be taken by this group of people?

1) Raise the concern on water safety issue by writing a formal statement to Pengerusi Tetap Belia dan Sukan, Infrastruktur dan Kemudahan Awam Dr.Ahmad Yunus Hairi

2) Garner more voices from NGOs and relevant parties to endorse the statement

3) A stepping stone towards banning the gov act and cease the operation of water transfer from mining site to Sg Sgor

*What can you do?

The whole idea is to BE MORE AWARE, BE A WISE CONSUMER, KNOW YOUR RIGHT AND STAND OUT TO RAISE ISSUE.

If issue is not raised, the vicious cycle will continue. And who will suffer? Not you per se, but MOTHER NATURE.

(The meeting is attended by Majlis Parliament for Klang, Charles Santiago, NGOs and individuals)
